From April 29 to May 1 MCC hosted the Arizona Special Olympics. During the Friday opening, volunteer Arlen Sykes stated the events immense significance for the participants.
“It’s extremely important. This is (their) time to shine. To watch the bliss, the happiness, the satisfaction, and the joy on their faces (is) what brings me out here,” Sykes said.
He also stated how the competition revealed personal aspects of the participants.
“It really is the character that makes a person a person,” he said.
Greg Dufort, the coach for the Scottsdale Bobcats, noted how competitive the athletes were.
“This is like the Super Bowl for them,” said Dufort.
He stated that the events could always use more volunteers.
“Getting involved (with the events) is a very rewarding experience. With the budgets cuts that the cities and municipalities are up against, volunteering is that much more important. If you’re thinking about it, then do it,” said Dufort.
