Immortality may be the new envy of angsty teens

Ashely Lawson

I guess no one sent me the memo about vampires, but apparently they’ve never been more in. With the vampire seeking human love story of the Twilight series books and HBO’s raunchy depiction of the cold blooded, just wanting the same civil rights as humans in True Blood, to the CW’s Vampire Diaries, hopping on the blood sucking bandwagon never felt so easy.

I have yet to understand if there is a real interest in these soul-less creatures other than a mere trend that will soon pass just as Harry Potter did.

Many begin to wonder where this growing popularity spawned.

I blame hormonal teenagers obsessed with sex and death, the very thing vampires are recognized for.

Maybe the Mormon writer of the twilight series, Stephanie Meyers is to blame for bringing back these bloodsucking mongrels.

Vampires feed on human’s vulnerability, such as the way they love, their guilt, desire, pity, and sadism, which I’m guessing is why they intrigue everyone so much.

Four or five months ago, I couldn’t even tell you that Twilight was about vampires.

All I knew was that 14-year olds went crazy anytime you mentioned it.

Unbeknownst to me, it was the beginning of a young generation obsessed with the undead.

Don’t get me wrong, after I watched Edward seduce Bella for two hours, I wanted more too.

I even became a member of the Tempe Public Library so I could check out the rest of the series.

I’m impatient, so waiting until Nov. 20 of this year for the new movie wasn’t going to happen.

After searching through the seemingly endless building, I found out that I had to be on a two month waiting list for the 2nd book in the Twilight series: New Moon.

A two month waiting list? Apparently the obsession is more in depth than originally thought, you have to wait two months to delve into stories of immortal beings who have all the time in the world.

Perhaps the trend will pass, but until then, immortality is the envy of teen angst internationally.

To expand my obsession with the pale skins I decided to move onto a more mature adventure and rent the first season of True Blood. Four blockbusters later, I was able to continue this trend and take all my roommates down with me.

Until something even more outlandish comes along, I’ll be wearing my “Team Edward” shirt, though sometimes I root for Jacob as well.
