Cutting back on spending doesn’t mean less holiday spirit
Iliana Deanda
It’s no secret that the economy has been plummeting lately. With the holiday season right around the corner, many must be wondering where the extra spending money for gifts or even holiday decorations will come from.
Experts say that this year’s holiday is going to be the worst economically since 1991.
These uncertain times have caused us to hold off on purchasing things like jewelry, flat screen TVs, or the latest and greatest gadgets, all for basic necessities.
With this diminishing economy, it still amazes me to see that handful of people who will spend their money on useless items like yard decorations or Christmas cards.
Don’t get me wrong, having holiday spirit is great but when you’re spending hundreds of dollars on snowman figurine it just seems pointless.
The economy might be affecting us all, but this holiday season try to let it affect you for the better. It could be an eye-opening experience to see what Christmas is like with a little less Santa Clause and a little more family interaction.
The season should be about families spending time together, and not about material items.
Whatever happened to making Christmas cookies with the family or caroling around a fireplace?
You could always re-use old wrapping paper, or send out postcards instead of pricey Christmas cards this year.
So this holiday season, when you’re out shopping, think about what really matters the most to you. Avoid credit card debt and spend your money wisely.
Most importantly, enjoy and give thanks for the time that you have with your family.
