The first game of October held a promising start for the T-Bird volleyball team. On Oct. 2, Mesa managed to come out on top in the close game against Chandler Gilbert. In the first set Chandler was serving up a hostile game but Mesa was attentive and successfully fought back. Chandler played a good game, keeping close at all times until the third and fourth set, even with a tie of 22-22 at one point. However, Mesa won out over all.
Mesa fought hard to gain and keep control during the second set with 17 kills. Breanna Scott (11) instantly spiked a kill and Mesa was able to keep their winning momentum. Megan Derr (5) had several successful serves, as well as Taylor Whiteside (4) who made several good hits as well. Taylor was responsible for 18 kills and 12 digs, a great aid to the game. Another notable mention includes Breanna Scott (11) with 23 digs and 11 kills. The T Birds successfully tired out the Coyotes by the last set when the opposition was too exhausted to even serve past the net.
Chandler’s fumble on their last serve ended up in Mesa’s victory with a score of 25-22, 25-19, and 25-22, respectively. “They did a good job!” Spectator Denise Campbell gushed. “Nice to see them win!” added the equally excited Louis Ellis. Unfortunately the momentum did not last. Their next game Oct. 7 against South Mountain was a disappointing loss. South Mountain managed a high score of 25 for all three sets. There have been three more consecutive losses for Mesa with a 3-1 score against Phoenix, a 3-0 loss against Yavapai, and another loss against Pima.
The Aztecs beat the T-Birds Oct. 21 in three sets, though at one point Mesa made it very difficult. There was a tie at 22-22 during the second set as Mesa tried to gain against Pima.
However, the opponent was able to put down two kills, regaining in the game. Mesa has had four victories in this season overall, the last being against Chandler Gilbert. The next game is tonight, Friday Oct. 23 at 7p.m. at the nearby Scottsdale Community College. This will be followed by a game at Glendale Community College on Oct. 30 at 7p.m. and then the Regional Playoffs starting Nov. 5.
