A new year brings new fashion, while some are here to stay

January is still considered a winter month to most, but for those fashionistas and couture-clad individuals, it means it is almost time to start the Spring 2009 trends.Though all Spring 2009 fashion shows already happened in September and October, the rest of the world is still getting wear out of their Fall 2008 threads.

For spring, Chanel has come out with many tweed dresses and skirts consisting of pastels and pale pinks, as well as gray and black.

For those still not ready to put away the paisley prints, head wraps, flowing skirts, or strappy sandals, Diane von Furstenberg has given those free spirits and flower children another season of hippie love.

Her line includes florals of all kinds as well as many flowing, loose dresses. The models wore flower head pieces that only added to the sixties feel and never seemed too over the top.

Speaking of over the top, Betsey Johnson’s spring line was exactly that and more. Besides doing cartwheels down the runway at the end of the show, her clothes were just as whirly as the acrobatics.

There were big-hooped dresses and models that sported pink, blue, and purple wigs. The line has a playful feel to it with short polka dot dresses and pirate inspired tights and tops.

Imagine being inside a children’s toy box when it comes alive at night.

“Betsey Johnson’s designs always have a crazy but creative look to it. I could never even imagine some of the stuff she comes up with, it is always so fun,” Devin Hook, sophomore at ASU, said.

Alexander McQueen’s line for spring is a walk through wildlife with his tasteful animal prints and delicate floral designs.

One of his dresses consisted of tiny flowers all over a pale colored tube top dress.

His animal prints were more of a design than pattern, with a couple zebra stripes made into one dress.

Hervé Léger by Max Azria, known for their bandage-style dresses that could serve as a second skin, always has a seductive look to their line.

For spring this year, the line focused on sharp shapes and color gradients to add to the sexiness the line promotes.

Lacoste kept its classy look with pale chinos and golfer hats. The show could make some want to jet out to the Hamptons for the weekend with its laid-back look.

Pale pastels, straw bags, and loosely fit clothes were the perfect contrast against the vibrant red and yellow swimwear and, even rompers, Christophe Lemaire designed for the line.

“Lacoste has and always will keep its status of being a classy and sporty brand. Whether it’s the fall or spring collection, it never disappoints me,” said Gail Hackitt, a sophomore at ASU.

Just because spring fashion is about to take over does not mean people have to pack away their fall/winter outfits just yet.

Updating or modifying warm outfits with a light cardigan or brown riding boots instead of bringing out the flip flops so quick is acceptable and smart.

Springtime still has its chilly moments, so making sure a light jacket or some form of warm clothing is available can never hurt while still being fashionable.
