The Associated Students of Mesa Community College, Student Government, is teaming up with the MCC football team in order to use star power to influence the student body to achieve their goals.”When we approached a lot of these people they said it would be an honor to be a part of this event,” said Louanna Faine, Special Events Chair for ASMCC.

This event will take place on April 22 and features a collection of speakers, some of whom have graduated from MCC, and others who will use their life experiences to connect with students who are in need of some direction.

“If one or two students can be impacted and save their education, that’s what it is all about,” Faine said.

Former NFL player Dan Manucci, a MCC alumni, who played for the Cleveland Browns and also played in the Canadian Football League prior to hosting a radio sports show “Calling All Sports”, will be one of the featured speakers.

Steve Holden, another former Cleveland Brown, and J.D. Hill, who played for the Buffalo Bills and Detriot Lions, is very active in the community and will also be a part of the event.

Hill is the founder of the “Catch a Vision” ministry program and helps run a number of Boys and Girls Club athletic camps to help kids stay focused on their goals.

“J.D. Hill jumped right on board,” Faine said.

The whole event is the is the brain child of Faine, who thought of the idea while talking to an athlete on campus.

The athlete said that they would not know what to do with their life if they did not do well in their particular sport.

If they were to fail at that sport they said they would drop out of school and then do whatever it takes to make it in life, be that legal or not.

ASMCC has made it a goal to increase student involvment and give students the encouragement they need to be successful.

Also speaking at the event will be Dr. Ray Perkins, current principal of Dobson High School in Mesa and former NFL star as well as a former head coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
