Bus route offers alternative form of travel to MCC Red Mountain campus

A new bus route has recently become available for students commuting to MCC Red Mountain. Route 184 now takes its passengers all the way from ASU polytechnic right to the curb of the Red Mountain campus.

“It’s something they’ve been working on for many years,” said Erica Horihan, MCC faculty member of the Student Life center at MCC Red Mountain.

Due to budget cuts the bus route took longer than MCC expected.

“The city and Valley Metro (have been) struggling for funding recently,” Horihan said.

The new bus route is expected to ease the impact that high enrollment has caused on parking availability.

“For the first time in Red Mountain history, we’ve had parking issues. because our enrollment is up,” Horihan said.

Students who run into car trouble, have no car, or simply want to carpool to reduce emissions now have another option.

The route travels along Power road in east Mesa to get to and from MCC and the ASU polytechnic.

“Access is a critical thing for the community colleges. Particularly today in the economic times a lot of people are losing jobs, having to get rid of their cars. a lot of students I see are riding bikes, that sort of thing,” said Jo Wilson, Dean of MCC Red Mountain.

“When we limit access we limit, sometimes, the students who have the ability to get an education,” Wilson said.

Students are eligable for a discounted bus pass on a first come first serve basis. For more information see Student Life at MCC Red Mountain.
