Don’t distract yourself by comparing life with others

Is there not enough to keep us all distracted already?  We’re forced to keep pace with a never ending amount of commodities, tech gadgets,  vapid celebrities and tons of trash media.  In our individual search for growth, peace, and happiness, the worst distraction of all is, and always has been, comparing your life with other people’s.  Apparently it’s not enough for us to realize that our lives are all different and that we experience the path in a way that is just as unique as our fingerprints.  Yet we still try to keep up with the Joneses.

And because our culture has grown to be one centered around celebrities, we also feel we have to keep up with the Kardashians and all the others who make our lives feel insignificant.  So what do we do?  Well, the camera and social media have helped us to produce our own “reality” shows where we compete with others in our network in a kind of image pageant.  The better the presentation, the more gratification gained from  likes and a growing follower audience that we hope will motivate at least a few people who will envy us.  It’s like accomplishments aren’t quite complete unless we can look around and measure it with someone elses life that we can deem inferior.

I believe these competitive showcases are a part of the reason many are depressed and unhappy with their gift of life. With the helping hand of consumer culture, we’re pressured in to playing these silly games of  possessing materials and statuses.  All for  thumbs up and approvals from our peers.  It would help if we started to actually treat each other as friends and family rather than degrade and give each other status anxiety.  This makes us forget about what’s really important.

The truth of the matter is we are all ultimately looking to reach the same goal.  Since there’s more than one way to get to the top of a mountain.  Don’t waste your time getting off course by comparing or judging others position.  Wherever you’re at now is probably where you are suppose to be.
