Earth week, more than just recycling and solar panels

Ryan McCullough

For one week, the Environmental Action Club will be hosting a plethora of events to highlight ways everyone can take better care of this planet of ours.”A lot of people think sustainability or Earth day is about recycling and we’re trying to show them there are a lot of different topics that encompass being sustainable, buying local products, conserving water. It doesn’t have to be about just recycling or just spending money to get solar panels,” said Suzi Dodt, MCC environmental sustainability coordinator.

Each day of the week will cover a different aspect of sustainability. Monday is wind.

“We’re (going to) have Clean Air Cab here . talking about why their cab company is more green than other cab companies and why it still costs the same to take a cab.”

Tuesday is water.

“We’re going to be having some giveaways. We’re going to be giving away re-usable water bottles,” said Christine Davis, member of the Environmental Action Club.

Wednesday is food.

“We’re (going to) have a farmer’s market type of setting out in the court yard area. We’re (going to) be having some vendors out there selling different types of products, local businesses, different things like that,” Dodt said.

Eight vendors have already confirmed their attendance.

“We’re (going to) have a guy that makes crepes right on site and he uses organic and natural products,” Dodt said.

For Thursday, the theme is fire.

“The environmental club has a solar oven, so they want to get that out there and show people how (they) can make cookies in the sun,” Dodt said.

“We’re also going to be having a Tesla vehicle on campus,” Davis said. “It’s a really cool lookin’ car. They’re so much more energy-efficient than the Volt or the Leaf.”

Friday’s event will focus on the Earth such as soil and recycling. Each day’s event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in front of the clock tower. The vendors will likely only accept cash.

For those interested in volunteering, contact the Environmental Action Club at eac.at.mcc@gmail.com or attend their meetings in LS 202 from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. every Thursday.
