Electronic artists missing the beat

Fallon-Renae Costa

It seems as though fist pumping has gone far beyond the Jersey Shore.

I’d be lying if I said I have never “beat the beat up” as some may say.  But for someone who has grown up on the likes of Rage Against the Machine, Nirvana, and Red Hot Chili Peppers I can’t help but worry about the state of our generation’s musical future.

Although electronic music has been around since the ‘80s the rise in its popularity has recently reached an all time high that even Eminem can’t deny.

You can’t turn on the radio without an electronic infused beat pumping out your speaker.

This is coming from someone who enjoys my fair share of various electronic music, dancing the night away to it, and has been to plenty of the festivities that seem to be consuming our youth’s summers lately.

But my love for the guitar and the rest of its instrumental family all together being played by talented musicians is a true love that I can’t and will not deny.

Yet another art that seems to be fading in comparison to the ultraviolet light being shined upon the new rock star of our generation; the DJ.

Even hip-hop doesn’t seem to bump in quite the same way.

We’ve gone from the rather blunt and heavy beats of Biggie Smalls Dr. Dre and NWA, to the auto-tuned Lil Wayne and undoubtedly upbeat rapper, Kid Kudi.

With the continual progress ofelectronics the growth of the musical genre has reached an unbeatable state of growth.

Most young children can already create basic song structures on free downloadable APPS for their smartphones. So we should expect an even larger influx of young aritsts.

However, the ability to create programmed loops, stand back and hit play has created a kind of stage awkwardness amongst live musicians, as we go out to watch people “perform,” and I must admit, it can be difficult to enjoy a lackluster DJ hit buttons.

The easy use, low cost, and increased possibilities makes it even easier for producers to embrace the craze.

What then will happen to our bands? Hopefully the fans’ love of classic instruments will continue to shine it’s lights upon those who truly love to still just jam.
