Empty bowls fill stomachs

To help feed the hungry in the East Valley, MCC will host its annual Empty Bowls event, an event which it has hosted for 20 consecutive years. At the event, students can purchase a handmade ceramic bowl for $10. Those who participate will get to choose their bowl from the more than 2,000 bowls that have been made for the event by students and community members.

The bowls will then be filled with soup and participants will be given a piece of bread and water, which organizers say approximates the amount of food many people in developing countries get for one day.

Another way the event is raising funds is through a silent auction featuring student art and donations from businesses.

All of the money from purchases and donations at Empty Bowls will go directly to Paz de Christo, a local interfaith anti-hunger ministry composed of members from churches, temples, synagogues and community organizations.

According to Sandee Holland, who facilitates communication between MCC and Paz de Christo, Paz de Christo offers evening meals 365 days a year to anyone who walks in the door and also runs programs to package boxes of food for distribution to the needy.

Everything for the event is donated by the community, including the clay for the bowls, the soup, bread, and utensils, said Holland.
