Guns on campus: It’s not OK

Legend’s View

With changes in school gun regulations, it’s important to be aware of the possibly not-too-distant future. Imagine if you will:

As a crazed maniac begins to shoot up the MCC gun locker, seeking control of the weapons cache there, a large scale gun battle breaks out.

The struggle ensues over a locker full of guns that students are required to check in as they arrive on campus, (should they choose to carry). Innocent students and stewards of public education are then gunned down in typical premeditated fashion, as they file in.

Now, mix in a few vigilante students, looking to ‘keep us safe’ from the ominous cloud of impending school executions. The taste for blood and warrior-spirit prevalent in these ‘type-a’ personalities will ensure that they arrive on the combat scene with all of the calm that one might find in a drunken bro, flexing at a party. They will have their own firepower with fingers in the trigger-well, ready to spray hot lead into the air, with slim hopes of hitting a criminal (If they even hit the target).

First of all, mass executions exist because of these kinds of weapons. There is no way to deny the latent capacity of a firearm to inflict death.

We love our amendment rights and support the notion of being able to carry a weapon anywhere we go. And the application of this right is great. In theory.

However, in practice, we at the board feel the combination of guns mixed with education is a Molotov cocktail and a ridiculous feint at public safety that could end up causing more harm and general anxiety than good. Warriors equip for mortal combat and fight other warriors on what is known as a battlefield.

Besides our cops, carrying a pistol need not be a prerequisite to graduate.
