High hopes for spring sports

Men’s and Women’s Golf head coach John Guerrero is now in his 12th season as head coach at MCC. Both programs have flourished under Guerrero .
The Men’s team has finished third in Division II in three of the last four years. This year’s team will be led by sophomore Conrad Isley, 2011 second team All-Regional, who will lead the task of replacing three All-Americans.
The women’s program has also experienced their share of success under Guerrero, winning the ACCAC and their Region eight of the last nine years. Jamie Jaruvangsant will return for her sophomore season after winning ACCAC player of the year honors in 2011 along with fellow sophomore Jazmine Roland who was named second team All-ACCAC last year.
Men’s track and field enters the year following mixed results in their 2011 season. Indoor track finished 20th at Nationals while the Outdoor team came in 11th. These were let downs from a 2010 squad that finished fifth and eighth respectively, one that gave head coach Steve Jacobs coach of the year honors.
On the Women’s side coach Jacobs experienced a more successful 2011 finishing twelfth indoor and 10th outdoor at nationals but like the men came short of the their 2010 season that saw them take eighth and seventh respectively.
Tennis Coach Adam Cohen is entering his sixth season as Mesa head coach and will look to improve on a Men’s team that finished 19th at nationals despite a regular season record of just 5-9. Cohen’s returning sophomores will need to improve on last season to make up for the loss of two time All-ACCAC player Guilherme Arcaro.
2011 was also a disappointment for Cohen’s Women’s team finishing fifth in regionals and posting just a 6-10 record. The Lady Thunderbirds did manage a winning record in conference play at 6-4, but failed to live up to the standards of the 2010 team that finished with a 10-2 record and came in 15th at nationals.
Regardless of previous season’s ups or downs these teams have a fresh start and will look to take advantage of it for some successful seasons.
