Homecoming festivities bring in MCC spirit

Mesa Community College’s homecoming tailgating events and football game against Scottsdale Community College were held on Nov. 8 for three hours on MCC’s practice field, adjacent to the John D. Riggs football stadium.MCC’s student government, ASMCC, organized the opening events and cheered on the football team before putting on a half-time show.
Admission to the festivities was free, and included games, music and food.
“We chose a carnival theme so students, family, teachers and whoever else could enjoy tailgating,” said Martir Martinez, a member of ASMCC.
“We wanted to appeal to people of all ages, so everyone could have fun and get excited for the football game,” Martinez added.
The “carnival” included giant slides, a moon bounce, a rock-climbing wall, a stunt trampoline, and other games like tug-of-war and water balloon fighting for everyone to enjoy.
“The invitation was extended to any student at MCC and all clubs, we just wanted to rally some support for our school. Some booths are just for fun, others are advertising club membership and getting people involved,” said Martinez.
Some clubs represented were the Lacrosse Club, Future Educators Club, Environmental Action Club, International Student Association and MCC’s Improv Group.
The Improv Group had coolers of water balloons, which served no purpose according to 20-year-old Courtney Trumbull.
“There’s no purpose really, we just wanted to throw some more fun into the mix,” she said.
Also adding to the pregame festival was a dance-off held at 12:30 p.m. on the practice field before the game began.
Three different dance troops competed; Female Prophecy, Unpredictable and Females Do It Better.
The groups were judged by a panel of three students and local D.J. Rampage Jackson, Female Prophecy and Unpredictable were chosen to compete once more during halftime of the football game.
Halftime festivities included the introduction of MCC’s Sports Hall of Fame inductees and the dance-off finale.
The inductees were announced, and despite technical difficulties with the D.J., music, and volume, the male dance troop Unpredictable was awarded the trophy.
