Indie Fan

ndie music first stood for independent bands that were not affiliated with a major label, meaning they weren’t “sell outs”, but now indie has become more of a genre for those deeply interested in it.I believe indie music means independent, non-mainstream, the bands that have more control of their music and have an unusual sound that is different than your average hip-hop, rock, or country.

Sometimes it is a mix of all three of those genres, which makes a really unique sound and therefore makes indie.

There is much controversy on what exactly qualifies as indie music.

The sound is more fresh, a little bit more happy and deep, and has bizarre beats that can be acoustic, synth, or even have a banjo.

Unique sounding voices also make for a good indie band. MGMT’s front man, Andrew Vanwyngarden, has a ’60s inspired voice that reminds me of Led Zeppelin’s, but with a more boyish sound like the Beatles.

Their psychedelic beats can make someone feel like they’re taking a trip into the future ’70s, which also gives them their indie sound.

One other fact that label’s them as indie is that they are not as well known despite how epic they are.

There are a great deal of talented, genuine bands out there that only a few lucky, music lovers know about, which makes those bands indie for that reason.

In contrast, bands that are well known can still be indie because of their different sound.

For example, the Killers can be considered indie rock or pop.

They are not straight up rock and roll and not exactly pop music either.

They have a different sound with electronic beats, but guitar and drums at the same time.

For some, indie is more of a production method and attitude when it comes to bands and their labels.

For others, indie means the type of music and sound the bands has, despite the labels they are with.

Either way, indie music has definitely branched out and grown from just meaning a completely independent band.

I don’t think the world would be the same without its quirky beats and eclectic sound.
