Jamboree event provides player progression

Mesa Community College was the host for the ACCAC Jamboree for men’s and women’s tennis on Feb. 21.

Although the event is an exhibition, it still is a tool for the coaches and players to evaluate their progress in the young tennis season.

It also provides an opportunity for some of the players who have not played matches yet to get in some work.

“It is important because it gives everybody an idea of what to expect and find where you need to improve before the season starts,” Head Coach Adam Cohen said.

Cohen has been involved with the Mesa Community College tennis program since 2005 and joined the coaching staff in 2006.

The Jamboree was always something the players looked forward to because of the amount of singles and doubles matches they can get into one day, Cohen said.

The men’s teams who participated with MCC were Glendale and Pima, and the women’s teams for those colleges played as well, but Eastern Arizona also brought their women’s team.

There was a tournament bracket involving all of the competitors for both singles and doubles.

Justin Haag and Max Wightman did not play in the season opener against Imperial Valley, but they played in the Jamboree.

“I just want to get my game back with less unforced errors, keep the ball in point, and really challenge my opponent,” Haag said.

Pima will return for a conference match up against the men’s tennis team at 1:30 p.m. on March 4.

Lady T-Birds tennis will not be home until they play in the Mesa Tennis Classic at 7 a.m. from March 10-15.
