Mesa’s women’s volleyball took on South Mountain Oct. 6 at MCC.The Thunderbirds were flat in the first match and knocked several balls out of play.

Mesa coach Brent Martindale chalked it up to “raised expectations.”

Mesa didn’t go down without a fight though.

The first match involved an epic back and forth with several Mesa players taking hard dives to make saves.

Despite Mesa’s hustle, South Mountain quickly took the first match 25-9.

The roles seemed to switch in the second match as South Mountain knocked three balls out of play early, which gave the T-Birds a 4-3 lead.

Cindy Jones dropped a well placed ball right over two South Mountain players going for a block. The point tied it at 15 and seemed to spark the home crowd and team for a short time.

South Mountain rebounded and quickly ran off six straight points to eventually take the match with a score of 25-19.

The third match was very even as both teams traded points. Neither team tallied more than a one point advantage until South Mountain took a 17-15 lead.

Mesa tied it up at 19 with a fantastic block forcing South Mountain to take their first timeout of the night.

Following their timeout South Mountain regained control until a bad serve tied it at 21.

Emily Blahak followed it with a serve that dropped in after hitting the top of the net, which put the T-Birds a 22-21 advantage.

Mesa failed to capitalize on their momentum however and gave up four points to their one, losing the third and final match 25-23.

“We’re not great offensively,” said Martindale after the match.

Martindale also added that Mesa was, “giving teams too many chances.”
