Legend’s View:

Whatever happened to formality? When did it become all right for teachers to start dressing like students? When did the world become so lax that seeing a grown man in court or in worship wearing sweat pants has become a regular occurrence? It doesn’t need to be like the 1950’s when wearing a coat and tie to a ball game or to the airport is mandatory. But there are still institutions in this country, in the world that should be treated with a certain amount of respect.

Teachers should dress better than students because, while they are in front of the class they are our, for lack of a better word, better.

Perhaps not all court visits require a suit, but a collar in a courtroom should be common sense.

Ignorant attire isn’t the only evidence of this loss of conventional courtesy in America.

One editor on the Mesa Legend related a story to the rest of the board of a cell phone going off at her grandfather’s funeral. You can still be thrown out of a movie for a cell phone going off and some fellow thought it wise to leave the ringer on at another mans funeral.

Now I know this is one instance, one man, one poor decision but it is indicative of a culture that spends a growing amount of its time in their own bubble.

With things like I-pods and Internet phones making it is easy to block out the outside world, you can see how common courtesies like giving another person eye contact when speaking with them has become antiquated. .

Simple things like teaching kids the proper use of a knife and fork are no longer common place.

Perhaps using a knife and fork well is not the most important thing in life but, good habits build good character and as with anything you have got to start small.
