MCC clubs demonstrates importance of health

On Feb. 11, MCC clubs brought to light the importance of our physical and mental wellbeing for Health Awareness Day.
A few clubs set-up tables at the clock tower to talk with students about their organizations, services they offer and to give advice about health.
The exercise science department was there with information on classes available on campus.
“We’re here to promote the importance of health and to talk to students,” said Jim Haggerty physical fitness director.
Their table included offering body mass index tests, radios to exercise with and class information brochures.
Along with fitness, Haggerty discussed their new health awareness center that is currently being built on campus.
The new building will offer classrooms, labs and studios for the exercise science classes.
Currently, their classes are being held in rooms across the campus.
To be a part of the exercise science department, students can register for classes any semester at MCC.
Another group set-up on campus was students of the dental school.
On campus, students are training to be dental hygienists. At their table, they were talking to students about proper oral health care.
“We want to raise awareness about dental hygiene, brushing techniques and our campus services,” said MCC student John Russo, 28.
Russo is a student dental hygienist, and is currently training with dentists on campus.
The group offered free toothpaste, oral health visuals and the opportunity to buy whitening strips that are prescription strength and can help people.
When a student purchases a box of whitening strips, they are helping people who can’t afford dental work.
The money goes back to the community. Also, for the price you are getting more than you would at a store.
“The box costs $40 and in it you get twice as many strips as store-bought ones, and they’re prescription strength,” Russo said.
If interested, they are available for sale at the dental office on campus.
Students can also visit to schedule an appointment with a student hygienist.
The dental hygiene program is always accepting new patients.
As part of the degree, the student hygienists are required to give complete care to a minimum of 10 students.
The visits are supervised by licensed hygienists and are about half the cost of a typical visit to the dentist’s office.
