MCC Environmental Action Club going strong, marking its 20th year

Christine Miller

Around the 20th anniversary of Earth Day in the fall of 1989, MCC students requested the formation of the Environmental Action Club. The first few years, EAC was run by four faculty members, and had a regular attendance of over 20 students.

Today the EAC was still a major contributor to campus activities and service projects in the community, raising environmental awareness and inspiring a love of nature.

The EAC holds an annual plant sale with plants produced in the campus greenhouse by means of sustainable growth.

Club members work in the greenhouse regularly, gardening and caring for the plants.

Revenue from club events such as the plant sale were used for funding student activities which vary from a “science day” learning activity for elementary school kids, to fun weekend trips for club members like hiking and camping.

Ron Dinchak, faculty advisor of the EAC, suggested that it was very important to take part in campus activities.

“Any way you can pack your resume, (to) show you are a team player,” Dinchak said.

Certificates are given for participation in service projects and could be included on a resume.

The Environmental Action Club meets every Thursday in room LS202 at 3:30 p.m.For more information about the EAC, visit http://www.mc.maricopa.edu/rdinchak/Website/index.html
