The Thunderbirds took on the Phoenix College Bears on April 10 as the season’s end draws closer. It was a windy day as the Thunderbirds came up to the mound and launched the afternoon game with their defense geared up and ready to play.

Phoenix College got ahead early scoring four runs in the first inning before MCC could get back into the dugout.

The T-birds responded to the energy created by Phoenix scoring two runs in the first inning.

“They got to play catch and routine plays,” said coach Tony Cirelli discussing Phoenix College’s efforts on the field.

“Scoring a lot wins most games,” said Cirelli describing how the run producing ability of the Thunderbirds would have led to a win in most situations.

Two more runs were scored during the fourth inning.

Two additional runs came later in the game to put MCC in a deep hole against their opponent.

“(We needed to) stay focused. (We made a) couple of bonehead mistakes. (We) don’t make those,” said freshmen, Kyle Harless.

“(We need to) keep working on fundamentals and make routine plays. (We had) a lot of hits, good swing and made contact with the ball,” Cirelli said.

Phoenix was able to score eight runs in the sixth inning to make the scoreboard read 15.

“We have not been executing recently. (We) hit the ball awesome, just not in the right spots. (The) umpires are fair, real disciplined. (I) respect umpires,”said freshman Jerry Pajak.
