A new year can bring a lot of things, but the most marvelous thing 2010 will bring is a new Social Distortion record. After touring behind “Greatest Hits” since 2007, Social D entered the studio early this month with the promises of new music to follow.
“We are scheduled to get in the studio January second. We are very excited. We have some great new songs,” said Mike Ness, the vegetarian front man and last remaining original member of the band.
“What I’m thinking we may just do is put out an eight song EP that people can download so they don’t have to wait. I think having to wait for twelve songs is dumb when no one is buying CDs anymore anyways. People are just downloading singles. I’d rather just get a new product out as soon as possible.”
Arizona fans got a little teaser taste of the new album at the Fall Frenzy on Sept. 20 of last year. Two new tracks include titles such as, “Still Alive” and “Bakersfield.” The new songs don’t stray too far from the punk-blues sound heard on “Sex, Love, and Rock and Roll,” but there is a distinct development in music style, most obviously heard in the addition of a keyboard to the traditional guitars, bass, and drums fans are used to.
With no title or release date, the new album remains shrouded in mystery. Ness did have this to say, “The last one had a lot of love songs. This one won’t have as many love songs, maybe this one will be more of a guys record. I have to go back revisit the last one, I have to revisit a few of them, see what I like, what I don’t like, and make the next one better than the last. Ultimately, I write records for myself. If I’m happy then other people will like it too.”
Stay tuned punk rock fans, the band that toured with the Ramones, played with Bruce Springsteen, and is fronted by a man comparable to Johnny Cash, is about to go on their first ever South American tour, and give fans a long awaited and anticipated album.
