On-campus jobs provide students with sense of community, paycheck

Wouldn’t it be nice to go to school and get paid without leaving campus? MCC has a lot of jobs for students on campus. Whether it’s the cafeteria or the bookstore, there is always work to be done.

But being so close to your next class isn’t the only good thing about having a job on campus; it also gives you the chance to meet new people and get to know the college you attend better.

“Working here I get to work with a lot of diverse people,” said Megan Callahan, who works at the information desk. Callahan has worked at the information desk for the last three weeks.

Callahan also said she feels the biggest advantage about working at school is that the time is flexible for classes.

She also feels that another great advantage about working where you go to school is that she knows more about the campus and the events at MCC.

Brittney Thomas, a criminal justice major, has worked for MCC in the admissions office for the last six months. She likes the convenience of working where she goes to school.

It is a great way to save gas and a lot easier to get from work to school when they are on the same campus.

Although the convenience of working at school is nice, Thomas also likes to be able to turn to her co-workers for any school-related questions, and also to be able to have that one-on-one interaction with people that also work where she goes to school.

When asked what she would like to get out of working at her job on campus, Thomas said, “I’m looking to improve my speaking and overall communication skills.”

Working for a college can get people involved more with events on campus.
