Posters, poetry for peace now on display in the library

“Gandhi said it. We’ll repeat it, ‘be the change you want to see in the world’,” said Karen Hardin, chairman of the MCC counseling department, in her welcome speech for the 2nd Annual Peace Poster and Poetry Unveiling Ceremony held in the library on Oct. 21. Erica David, the mistress of ceremonies, introduced Cool Hands, a sign language performing group. Cool Hands signed the lyrics to the National Anthem while the music played in the background.

Ruth Lim spoke next. Lim founded the Children’s Benefit Foundation, the group that sponsors the contest, after returning from military service during Desert Storm.

“Even our little activity will have impacted about 500 people,” Lim said.

The contest received 281 entries. Fifty winners were chosen.

Julian Davis, MCC student, provided the other musical attraction for the event. Davis performed “If I Ain’t Got You” by Alicia Keys on his harmonica.

Davis chose the song because he feels that spirituality and faith will help to solve domestic violence.

“Their Lord and Savior is watching over them, victims of domestic violence,” Davis said.

Upon finishing, a round of applause filled the area in front of the Grounds for Thought café.

Then, Cool Hands returned for a set of four songs. Maureen Douglas, Cool Hands conductor, taught the audience how to sign love, self, peace and spirit before the set.

Danny White, MCC adjunct faculty member, unveiled the artwork after Cool Hands finished.

“Children live what they learn and they learn what they live,” said White before the curtain was parted.
