Red Mountain not a ghost town

I never realized that I was a ghost until I read the August 24th Opinion titled ‘MCC builds a ghost town’. This ghost (and staff person) just left a lab in the new Saguaro building, after patiently waiting my turn to get out the door while the students flowed in. When I left, there was exactly one empty seat in the 32-seat lab.

And I’m betting that last seat probably filled before class actually started. It seems to me that this “ghost town” may be positively infested with ghosts!

I asked a Computer Lab Tech on Tuesday, when the lab had similarly filled seats, if a formal class was meeting there.

He said yes, that classes were held both in the lab and in the library due to lack of classroom space. We have very little room in our Learning Enhancement Center.

We work with what we have yet overflow into the lab area. We are growing, faster than the Southern and Dobson campus.

But in case you hadn’t noticed, the East Valley has grown far beyond Southern and Dobson, too.

If Red Mountain is a “ghost town for high school students” does that make the Southern and Dobson campus a relic for those who live in the past?

I don’t think so. I think the East Valley needs both. And I think the majority of voters recognized that need when they supported the bond election that funded the new Saguaro building.

I hope that one day soon Southern and Dobson will quit looking down their noses at us, recognize the needs of the community, and start to encourage and support our growth.

If we only had one campus that every student had to drive to, Southern and Dobson would really have a parking problem to worry about.
