Smart phones used in a variety of ways

The majority of Americans own a cell phone, and more than half own a smart phone, such as an iPhone, Blackberry or Instinct.”I don’t know how my parents got from point A to point B without cell phones,” said 21-year-old ASU junior Natalie Frank.

Frank uses the Blackberry curve, which has a navigational system.

“I’m genetically prone to getting lost, I’d be nowhere to be found without my GPS system on my phone,” Frank said.

The navigation system came in handy for Frank when she found a lost dog.

“We put the address on the collar into my phone GPS and within 10 minutes we had the dog safely with her owner,” Frank said.

While some students benefit from the GPS system, others use their smart phones to check their bank accounts.

“I forgot to look at my balance before we went grocery shopping, but luckily my phone has the ability to let me check my bank account,” 18-year-old ASU freshman Kasey Judd said.

Judd currently has the Instinct from Sprint, which is a touch screen smart phone.

“Without my phone, I couldn’t have set a budget for the shopping trip with my roommates,” Judd said.

Other students aren’t as enthusiastic about the smart phone craze, such as 20-year-old ASU freshman Chris Hafen, who used to own a Blackberry Pearl.

“My Blackberry broke within a month of owning it,” Hafen said.

Now he owns the updated version of a Nokia phone.

“My old school Nokia provides me with the basics and I couldn’t be happier. It’s all about the basics,” Hafen said.
