The Mesa Legend would like to spotlight a political and controversial cartoonist, Lalo Alcaraz, who will be on campus on March 31 at the Kirk Center in the Navajo Room.
Mesa Community College has a plethora of diversity.
“One of MCC’s missions and values is diversity in the classroom,” said English instructor, Robert Soza.
Lalo is pro-immigration and his cartoons are typically focused on the voice of the Latino and Chicano communities.
“He’s here as a teaching tool, there are a lot of people feel that undocumented immigrants in this community are a serious and significant problem,” said Robert Soza.
The political cartoonist intended on visiting the classrooms as well as the public presentation.
“He’ll challenge students to think a little bit more critically, he’ll be able to answer some questions … and force students to reflect on why they believe in what they believe.”
Maricopa County Sheriff, Joe Arpiao, will be on campus on the March 25 and the following week Lalo will be on campus.
“Students have a unique opportunity. to hear two very strong voices on the opposite sides of immigration and debate, they will be able to leave both of these experiences with a much better understanding of the immigration is understood on different sides of the political spectrum,” Soza said.
Not only will he be conducting a public presentation but he will be visiting classrooms, “He’ll challenge students to think a little bit more critically he’ll be able to answer some questions. And force students to reflect on why they believe in what they believe.”
He will present a prospective that others do not typically undersand.
Faculty Learning Grant is funding this collaborative effort through Robert Soza and faculty from the cultural sciences department a MCC is Chicano Latino student club, English and creative writing.
MECha de MCC is advertizing the event as a way to increase their visibility and recruit.
