Stop wasting the vote

Isaac Metcalf

Former President Lyndon B. Johnson once said, “The vote is the most powerful instrument ever devised by man for breaking down injustice and destroying the terrible walls which imprison men because they are different from other men.”

It is important as young Americans that we take part in voting in this next election.

Whoever wins, whether it is Romney or Obama, will play a significant role in steering the future of this country.

And that’s not to mention the various senatorial elections occurring on the same day.

One law that hangs in the balance is the Affordable Care Act, otherwise known as Obamacare.

This has been a controversial piece of legislature that has been taken to the Supreme Court. If Romney is elected, he will “act to repeal” it.

Another issue that is in the discussion is the U.S. economy. Romney and Obama have starkly different plans to stimulate the market.

According to The Tax Policy Center, “Governor Romney would permanently extend all the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts now scheduled to expire in 2013.”

On the other hand, President Obama proposes, according to The TPC, “letting the Bush tax cuts expire for top earners.”

These are two important issues that have been at the forefront of the discussion, and they impact each and every American in their every day lives.

That being the case, it is the duty of every citizen that is eligible to vote, especially since we as college students are still so young and can have a say in deciding the country’s path during our lifetime.

We, as Americans, have a privilege that few others in the world’s history have shared. Let us not waste it.
