Students’ packing a firearm while on campus was a large concern at the recent ASMCC Student Senate meeting on March 1. MCC President Shouan Pan addressed the Senate at the beginning of the discussion.

“They (the Arizona Legislature) want to allow concealed weapons on college campuses,” he said.

Many students stood at the lectern after Pan to voice their opposition to the proposed bill.

“We think the colleges should be able to make their own legislation to protect students,” said Christina Coolbaugh, a member of the Muggle Quidditch Club.

“We’re here to learn and not to be worried about the student next to (us) having a gun,” said Bridget Carson, a member of the Crime Investigators Club.

“I believe that . this environment is no place for a weapon,” said Joy Erickson, a member of the Veterans Affairs Club.

The Student Senate has crafted legislation stating that they are opposed to the proposed legislation on gun use at college campuses. The Senate’s legislation was moved to the next meeting for discussion.

In other action, the Senate approved $750 for the Environmental Action Club to purchase re-usable water bottles to hand out for Earth Week.

PSI Beta received $945 to fund a dinner for 30 inductees into the club.

The NAACP was also awarded $712.50 to attend the 41st Annual Freedom Funds Award Ceremony.
