Sustainability never looked better, literally

Lately, the world is beginning to take “green living” to whole new levels. One way to give back to the environment is organic clothing.

Clothing made from leaves or potato sacks may come to mind when some think of organic clothing, but come on, it’s 2008.

There are many different kinds of natural resources that are used to make eco-friendly clothing.

Bamboo is one of them, mostly because it grows rapidly as a plant and when it is made into material, has a silky, luxurious softness.

Designers such as Oscar de la Renta and Diane Von Furstenberg have incorporated bamboo into some of their fashion collections because of their flowing drape and environmental sustainability.

Hemp is another fiber that green designers are using. It is both durable and biodegradable so it serves as good material.
Hemp is one of the oldest resources and is used for many things besides clothing material.

For example, Lewis Carroll’s “Alice in Wonderland” was all printed on hemp paper.
Some of the most used and common fibers used to make organic clothing are hemp, linen, silk, and wool.

This is because they are not normally chemically processed and are completely eco-friendly.

One menswear collection from London called Bamford & Sons has an organic collection containing leather that is tanned with vegetable dyes and organic cotton.

The collection is pricey costing about $2,320 for a linen suit.

Nau, another designer line, incorporated organic clothing in their collections as well with recycled polyester jackets.

MCC fashion student, Kirk Millar, thinks organic clothing makes a difference in the environment.

“It is important to recycle and use organic material. The fashion industry is going more green so when they start using more organic clothing, so will the rest of the world,”
Millar said.

MCC fashion student Zach Boscia had a different opinion on the eco-friendly clothing.

“I think it’s just for vegans, which is fine, but I really do not think it makes a difference if people wear it or not,” said Boscia.

Many stores, such as American Apparel, feature organic clothing in their lines. They have organic tees, tanks, and under garments all made from organic substances.

Loomstate is another company that has all organic clothing, which can be found at Anthropology and the brands website.

Though it is not a very well known trend yet, hopefully in the near future more people will take on this trend and help the environment by incorporating organic materials into their own wardrobe.
