The Tea Party Patriots of Scottsdale held their monthly meeting on Sept. 21, in order to educate their members on the upcoming November mid-term election. Speakers included Republican candidates Michele Reagan, David Schweikert, Bob Littlefield, Guy Phillips, Bill Montgomery, and Ken Bennett.

Byron Schlomach from the Goldwater Institution, Alan Korwin from Gunlaws.com, and Jennifer Gratz spoke about ballot propositions as well.

Honey Marques, president and organizer for the Scottsdale Tea Party, covered the organizations goals.

“To educate people (on) constitutional principles, limited government, free market, fiscal responsibility, and foremost, personal responsibility. The Tea Party is to get the message out to the people and say we need to stop this nonsense and get the government back in our hands,” Marques said.

On Sept. 23, the Republican Party released its new “Pledge to America.” http://pledge.gop.gov/, which is the GOP’s official synopsis of the pledge, covered several of the issues included in the pledge. Several of them matched what Marques had stated the Tea Party is pushing to modify.

Marques also detailed the change the Tea Party would like to see in America.

“People need to go to work (and) get a job. If it’s cleaning toilets, or washing dishes, or flipping burgers at McDonalds. Get a damn job. (Don’t) lean on the government for every whim and need,” Marques said.

She stated that supporting non-handicapped individuals is not the government’s responsibility.

“This is not a country were other people take care of you. Family takes care of people, not the government. You’re having a hard time making ends meet, go sleep on your brother’s couch. Don’t lean on the government. The government is other people’s money, and that’s not cool with America,” Marques said.

She stated that the organization doesn’t support a singular party.

“We support principals and if a certain party falls in line with our principles, then yes, we will support those candidates, but we’re not a partisan organization,” Marques said.

Huffingtonpost.com recently covered 25 Tea Party supported candidates that had ran in several states’ Republican primaries. Seventeen of the candidates won.

Marques stated that the Tea Party has overwhelmingly supported Republican candidates because they are much closer to their morals than Democrats are.

“Republican candidates tend to uphold our principals, so we get behind those candidates. Bigger government (means) bigger spending. Those are all Democrat (ideas). I guess the Republican Party tends to be on the side of freedom more than the Democrats. It’s pretty obvious to people,” Marques said.

She stated that the Tea Party wants to push the Republican Party back toward its philosophical standing it had during Ronald Reagan’s presidency.

“(We want to) kind of hijack it, if you will. Get the Republican Party back (to its) conservative principles.”

She discussed the recent Republican Primary in Arizona as well.

“There’s a lot of progressive Republicans, John McCain is one of them. We, the Tea Party, got behind J.D. Hayworth, but (Hayworth) lost and now we have to get behind the most conservative guy, and that’s McCain. Not the Democrat,” Marques said.

She stated there is no desire for the Tea Party to become its own political entity.

“Third party is destructive. It will split the vote,” Marques said.
