The Necklace’ dazzles audiences at MCC

Walt Porter

Over 600 costumes were created for the Mesa Community College’s Theatre Outback production of “The Necklace.” There were 42 performers and an array of dance styles. The performance included interesting and appealing lighting techniques and music that soared through the theatre.

The production was set in an English pub, with a girl who had big dreams of being center stage; just her and her passion for dancing.

She was quickly sought after by a man, who claimed his desire to help her succeed by giving her the necklace.

Unfortunately, his intentions proved evil when he enchants her with a necklace that gave the man the power to command.

This is where more of the story unfolded in dance, giving the viewers a “show and tell” that incorporated other hit Broadway tunes and modern songs.

The story turns as the girl is able to foil the man’s plan when she puts the necklace around his neck and it kills him.

In the finale, free of the necklace’s enchantment and the deceitful man, she goes on to perform on Broadway, without the jewels.

With performers on stage and narrators at the side, the show was well-done. Various dance styles kept the viewer’s eyes to the stage and heart in the story.

A mix of old world with modern music, “The Necklace” was a stellar production that brought the story to life.
