The new cool

W.I.N.C. (pronounced Wink), short for Weird Is the New Cool, is a new local band whose main goal is to create uncategorized music: no rules and no boundaries. The band is comprised of four young talented guys who describe their music as indie hip-hop.

Nate VerWoert, who plays the drums, is a 19-year-old MCC student. Kyle Collins is 18 and does the vocals. Ross Yip, a 19-year-old ASU student, plays the bass.

Last, but not least, are Cash Murphy who is 25-years-old, who plays the guitar and K.C. who is the manager of the band.

They already have a demo which includes four songs written by the four talented musicians.

The four songs in the demo CD include, “I Just Want to Be Heard”, “Beer Pong”, “Love Song”, and “I Started to Think”.

When asked who they listened too growing up they said Gym Class Heroes and N.E.R.D were among their top artists.

The four met in high school as they realized that they really wanted to get together and start a band.

When asked how they met, Collins said, “Me and Nate got together when we were in a Spanish class and I knew he played the drums. I already had done some hip hop stuff so we decided that we should get together and try to put some tracks together.”

“We basically met up one day and did some covers of my solo songs. Then we got the idea to try recording a song together as I directed how I wanted the band to sound and they picked up on it.” Collins said.

Collins said that Verwoert then decided he wanted to be the drummer for the band.

“After, we got Ross, the bass player, who was a good contribution. Then we added Cash and Brandon who are the guitarists.” Collins said.

And that is how they claimed to have gotten started. The name W.I.N.C. came from their personality since they are a bit wild, therefore they decided to get the acronym W.I.N.C. for short.

As of now, they are working hard on their first album which they are thinking of naming “GIRLS.LOVE.FUN.MUSIC” as it describes exactly how and what they feel like.

For the musicians, music is a way to express themselves and help people relate to their songs.

“The great thing about playing in a band is when you walk on the stage and everyone in the audience is giving you cheering you on, being on the stage is not like anything else,” said Cash Murphy.
