Useless rules on campus

Ben Garcia

As of last summer, Mesa Community College has been a smoke-free campus … psych.

I still see people smoking away on a daily as a I walk around campus.

When the smoking ban was put into effect, the only real change that happened on campus was that a few more signs that students don’t pay attention to went up.

If students did pay attention to those sign they would’ve known about the tobacco ban on campus.

It seems as if the only people on campus that are obeying the tobacco ban are the employees.

At any given time the bus stops along Dobson and Southern have school employes partaking in a little smoke break.

This makes me question as to whether or not there are actual consequences for breaking the tobacco ban on campus.

My guess, probably not.

A smoker might get a “hey bud, can you put that out” from a public safety workers but is that it?

I was a proponent of the smoking ban when it happened and now I don’t understand the point of having a rule that goes unenforced.

I understand the rule was passed by the district and applies to all MCCCD properties but if they are somehow enforcing the rules better elsewhere then why can’t we do the same here at MCC?

The solution seems simple to me: enforce the rule in order to discourage people from smoking or just admit it was a flawed rule and rescind it altogether.
