Woman’s rights: your body, your health, but not your choice

Fallon-Renae Costa

As Election Day rears around the corner, candidates seem to have less to say about the economy and more about how a woman should handle her own body.

Considering that the United States is leading among industrial countries in STD rates and in unplanned pregnancy, it seems the issue regarding women’s health care and Planned Parenthood would be considered a no-brainer.  It has been awhile since women have had to put their foot down when it comes to their rights, but this time it seems to be getting somewhat personal.

The Republican Party is clearly breaking rule number one; do not mix religion and politics. In an effort to force what they believe is right on others, they choose to ignorantly turn their heads to the fact that defunding services such as Planned Parenthood will only hurt our country in the long run and as a whole. There is already a law, called ‘Title X’ that clearly prohibits government funds from being used for abortion services.

Plus, cutting funds for abortion does not change the fact that it is legal in the U.S., but I suppose that is next on the agenda.

Only eight states have laws preventing women from being charged more for health insurance. Some even charge woman up to 60-75 percent more for coverage.  We have all seen the affects the economy has had as far as benefits go. Plus, if you are not pregnant or do not have a child, the choice of getting any sort of coverage is out the window, as is the same rule for AHCCCS.

Not to bash on those who have children, but should I not get the same opportunities to take care of my health needs as them because I am a self-sustaining worker and student who has made the decision to live child-free?

And let’s not forget those running for office that clearly state their view that abortion, even in the case of incest or rape, should be illegal.

I cannot help but scoff considering a man  has no idea what it is like to have a child, let alone give birth to one that is a result of a man sexually degrading us. But according to Congressman Todd Akin, R-Mo., real female rape victims can somehow stop the man magically at the point of insertion, right?
