Making a Move
Erica Tiffany
Los AngelesMax Rowles is currently attending Occidental College in L.A., pursuing a B.A. in history. After graduating, he would like to be artistically involved in the film or music industry, or to be a professor.
L.A. Has It: I chose Los Angeles because I wanted to stay in the West and I liked L.A. better than Portland, the other city that offered me a scholarship. Los Angeles is the second biggest city in the country, and that had me curious.
Local Advantage: The best part about being a local is knowing the freeways and the rush hour cycles. Also finding down to earth spots that you can only know about by word of mouth and living in the city.
The Right Move: There is so much culture, religion, art, and music. It’s definitely startling yet refreshing! It’s definitely the right place for me and I would recommend it to anyone looking for something new.
Drawback: The only thing I don’t particularly like about L.A. is all of the smog and pollution, and knowing that I am contributing to it.
Job Scene: There are so many more job opportunites in Los Angeles than in Phoenix, I will probably stay here after I graduate. It seems like there are always places hiring.
Chicago
Lindsay Taggart graduated from Harrington College of Design with an Interior Design degree. She has lived in Chicago for 4 years working in a high end, custom residential furniture showroom.
Local Fun: Buddy Guy’s Legends is a famous blues bar with awesome music every night, and the food is really good too. I also like Hackney’s, they have amazing burgers, seafood gumbo, homemade bread, and they have a lot of interesting beers on tap that they try to change out a couple times a year to keep the variety changing.
City Appeal: It’s a city full of young adults. I think it’s appealing because it’s a big city but it’s full of neighborhoods, such as Wrigleyville, boystown, the loop, etc. You can fi nd places to rent pretty cheap (for the city) if you look in the right places. It is also great because it’s really easy to get around on the CTA.
Weather: It’s really nice from May to October, and there are festivals almost every other weekend in the summer. But for the rest of the year it is freezing and windy.
Job Scene: I would say if you’re interested in moving to Chicago, do it, because it’s really easy to meet people there. There are all kinds of jobs, something for everyone.
Washington, D.C.
After graduating from ASU in 2006 with an economics degree, Amanda Daninger accomplished her goal and moved to Washington, D.C. She has lived there for 14 months and works for a political polling company.
Local Gem: I love the restaurant Two Aimes. They serve the most amazing partisan pizza with delicious wine and salad. Every night except for Monday night is a busy night there, so go on Mondays.
Weather: It’s either hot and humid or rainy and cold. The summer is okay because at least it is hot, but I get really depressed during winter with the cold, wind, and short and cloudy days.
One Problem: The one bad thing about Washington, D.C. is that it’s expensive to live here.
Job Scene: Most people who move here want to work on the hill. I like American History and enjoy politics, so I wanted to be in the epicenter of both.
Last Words: If you’re wondering whether to move or not, do it.You’ll never wonder what could have been.
New York City
In August, junior Arlyn Schmuck transferred from MCC to the Fashion Institute of Technology in lower Manhattan to pursue a career as a fashion photographer.
Hot Eats: I can’t wait to go to Little Italy and work my way through every restaurant! That will be heaven for my stomach.
A Little Advice: I believe that N.Y.C. is a place where dreams come true, only if you are willing to put in the hard work. You have to be ready to claw your way up to the top and if you’re not ready for that, it’s not the right place for you.
Weather: I don’t know what I’m going to do when I have to start wearing socks. I’m so used to wearing flip flops all the time, even in the winter or in the rain.
Higher Education: I chose to move to New York City because they have the best school for Fashion Photography in the country. Going to college here is important because it is throwing me in the center of it all. I want to work with the world’s top models. Arizona just doesn’t have what I’m looking for.
First Thing on the List: Find Carrie Bradshaw’s apartment from Sex and the City! That show is just another reason that I wanted to move to New York City.
Last Words: It’s hard to move away from friends and family, and I will miss everyone. But chasing my dream is worth the move across the country, and I know they will always be here when I come home to visit.
