Discovery series offers free events to public

The Family Discovery Series on MCC’s Red Mountain Campus started off within the recently built Saguaro Building on Sept. 25. “My ultimate goal is to have this be a place of destination for the community,” said Jo Wilson, dean of the Red Mountain Campus.
The series came out of an idea Wilson had when she became the dean of Red Mountain Campus.
“I wanted it to be something for families.”
“Particularly, in this economic time when everything is so costly, they could bring their family for the evening, they could be entertained, and they could get a little education,”
“So we started with things that obviously appeal to kids, and that’s animals,” Wilson said.
The series began with Meet and Greet the Animals of the Sonoran Desert, which was presented by Kyra Perry, biology faculty member and caretaker for the animals in the new terrarium.
The free lecture encouraged kids and adults to get up close and personal with invertebrates, amphibians, and reptiles.
Perry also brought out a venomous gila monster for which the crowd quickly formed a line to get a rare chance at touching the lizard.
“It gives them a better appreciation of nature, their environment, and where we live in Arizona,” said Gina McMichael, an agribusiness major at MCC who brought her twin girls to the event.
There will be an event every third Friday of every month at 7 p.m.
The next event will be Rock Art of the Southwest Oct. 16, at 7 p.m.
