A look at on-campus resources and events during Mesa Community College finals week

The month of December brought with it finals season at Mesa Community College, but students on campus are surrounded by a network of resources that help ensure the semester ends with a strong and positive presence of all students, faculty and staff.

Here’s a look at all the happenings on campus starting as soon as Monday.

Make sure you have the fuel to get through your finals with these campus stops for food and snacks

MCC’s student life department will provide a variety of food for students at both campuses on Dec. 4-7 at the Red Mountain campus and Dec. 11-14 at the Southern and Dobson campus.

Red Mountain will start their week with cereal, fruit and yogurt on Monday, Dec. 4 in the Mesquite building, room 210, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., followed by three consecutive days of food in the lobby of the Saguaro building.

Tuesday will have nachos from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., followed by cookies and cocoa on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., and breakfast with college administrators on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

The Southern and Dobson Student Life department will host their Fuel for Finals from Dec. 11-14 on the Student life outdoor patio near the Clock Tower.

Monday, Dec. 11 will start the week with a breakfast with staff from college admissions from 8:00 am to 10:00 a.m.

Tuesday will have cereal, Wednesday will have pastries and fruit, and finally Thursday will have quick to-go snacks, all from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Take time to de-stress with activities in the Mesa Community College libraries

The Mesa Community College libraries at each campus will have free activities aimed to help students take time for a break or seek research help in a quiet environment.

Starting on Monday, Dec. 4, each library will have their snacks and free crafts for students who need time away from the busyness of finals.

Each library maintains study rooms that can be reserved in advance for designated quiet time, while standby librarians will be at the second floor reference desk to help with research.

Students can make reservations up to once per day for an up to three hour session using the online “D!BS” platform. Each of the library’s hours can be found here.

Online resources for the library can be found on the MCC website and include the 24/7

“Ask a librarian” feature to help students organize research and think of new ways to approach a topic.

Free tutoring at both Mesa Community College campuses right up until the last day of finals

Tutoring at each campus is available for students ahead of finals in specific classes starting on Dec. 11.

The Southern and Dobson campus offers tutoring in subjects like math, biology, psychology, and foreign languages. The Red Mountain campus has tutors in general subjects including writing and biology.

A full list of tutoring options and their hours for finals week at each campus can be found on the MCC website.

Please get comfortable, Pajama Week at MCC encourages smiles for the last week of the semester

MCC’s art department will host their second Pajama Week from Dec. 11-15 after a department only celebration last year inspired a campus-wide day to remember to stay lighthearted during finals week.

The loose event encourages everyone, including students, to dress up in their pajamas in what many would call the most hectic week of the year.

“We will be wearing our PJ’s to the president’s end of the year celebration. So, Pajama up and join us for some cozy fun!” said art department staff Nichole Santigati in an online post to employees.

Unwind from classes with an Indigenous market and performances from Native American dancers

The Skoden Winter Market on Friday, Dec. 8 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on the Southern and Dobson campus for a free outdoor event hosted by MCC’s Inter-Tribal Student Organization.

After  classes end for the day, the market will open with Indigenous artists, makers and food vendors who will be alongside performances from Maswadae, Apache Crown Dancers, and Pow Wow Dancers, according to the T-Bird times.

There will also be winter themed games and activities that were listed as fun for the whole family.

Take the night to relax at the second annual Holiday Dance at the Southern and Dobson campus

The second annual Holiday Dance, hosted by the Latter Day Saints Student Associations on Dec. 17, looks to bring together all students across Mesa Community College’s Southern and Dobson campus for a night of winter themed celebrations.

The student club hosts the event in the Navajo Room from 6:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m., and will provide hot chocolate, cotton candy, games and activities to go alongside the namesake dance, with music from MCC’s own DJ program.

A donation of $5 is suggested for entry, with all proceeds benefiting the student club, but not required for entry.
