Cartoonist takes on Navy SEALs challenge

Chase Johnson

On March 14, I participated in the Navy SEAL Fitness Challenge at ASU.My brother called me earlier in the week and invited me to the challenge.

Ignorantly, I accepted.

Mind you, I have not worked out like this and I was about to take part in a day of Navy SEAL Fitness, my only goal was to complete it.

First, we were required to swim 500 yards. We had the option of using the breast or side stroke; I chose the breast stroke.

Swimming 10 laps in a pool across and back is actually a lot harder than one would think.

By the second lap I was already tired and began dragging.

Left with no other options I had to try the side stroke.

I realized very quickly, when the Drill Instructor keeps yelling at you because he thinks your swimming freestyle that’s not a good sign.

I was worn out by the time we finished the swim, but that didn’t matter because we had five minutes to change into dry clothes and get ready for more exercises.

We lined up in two lines and partnered up and had to do as many push-ups as we could in two minutes.

The minimum was 50 in our platoon.

Then we had to do the same thing for sit-ups and dead lift pull-ups.

All this before we had to run a mile and a half, which I was not looking forward to, but I had come all this way so I was not going to quit. By the second lap, I felt as if my calf muscles were going to slowly peel right off the bone because they were hurting so bad.

I could have laid down and moved faster than I was running.

Myself, and a girl who was running at the same speed as me, decided that at the sixth lap, we would run as hard as we could and race for the finish.

She ended up beating me by one second. Afterwards, they provided a ceremony and handed out T-shirts of accomplishment. After everything was said and done, I accomplished my goal to finish the fitness challenge and that was all I needed.
