On Oct. 6 more than 100 people came out to participate in MCC’s Domestic Violence Awareness Conference and Day of Unity. The topic of the conference was “Empowerment: Survivor to thrivor.”

John Pombier, a Mesa City prosecutor, was the keynote speaker.

According to Pombier, the goal for the conference was to create awareness around the community and that anyone can play a role in preventing domestic violence.

Pombier said there are several ways to prevent domestic violence including it being talked about and being brought out in the open.

“That’s something that happens to other people it’s not something that happens to you and your family, your friends whether it’s a husband and wife people don’t like to talk about it, its uncomfortable,” Pombier said.

There were a number of workshops that took place during the five-hour conference including: primary prevent 101, religion, spirituality and domestic violence, domestic violence around this world, creating healthy relationships and LBGT same sex violence.

Terrance Bailey, a social work major, expressed how much it meant to him to see a conference like this being put on by MCC due to his background.

Bailey was placed in a foster care, but dealt with being abused and had different types of trials that he had to overcome in order to move on in his life. Bailey believes it’s a generational issue and the cycle needs to be broken.

“It’s not your fault even though it’s your secret, you have more power than you think you have,” Bailey said.
