Is following your heart the best decision?

The View

There are many calls that encourage us to “follow your heart” or “go with your instinct” that appear in movies, novels, and memes on the Internet.

We often hear these phrases when it pertains to our happiness or safety, and although it may seem to be promising advice they can be very misleading.

This advice of following your heart carries the connotation that the most pleasing or most attractive choice we go with will ultimately give us long lasting enjoyment.

But what may seem attractive to the eye does not mean it will carry with it favorable consequences.

What it comes down to is our lack of wisdom versus our strongest desires.

This is seen many times in relationships.

A person may become infatuated with someone for his or her looks, wealth, or other attributes and in turn blind themselves to the fact that this person holds very little respect for any kind of relationship.

An infatuation is based on feeling not knowledge.

It becomes dangerous when we let our feelings lead us because what we feel may not be the right thing to do.

Not only are we our own worst enemies but often times we are forced to a decision because of our peers.

We are creatures that need acceptance.

With our friends or family pushing us to “just do it” we are more likely to give in because we fear of being rejected.

Whether it be drugs, food, relationships or acting on our anger we risk being harmed emotionally and physically.

So rather than being emotion driven, we should respond rationally, thinking of the consequences of our actions.

Fighting against feelings is easier said than done but to see any kind of change in the world will require us to start by changing and restraining ourselves.
