Legend’s View

“The 700 Club” is not exactly a widely-viewed program among our younger generation, but it recently planted an angry seed in the minds of many on Jan. 13 when host Pat Robertson claimed that the deadly Haitian earthquake that is believed to have killed thousands of people is God’s vengeance for a “pact” in which Haitians swore to the devil.
What?
“Haitians have been cursed because they made a ‘deal’ with the devil to free themselves from the French,” Robertson said.
“Even after the French were gone, the Island of Haiti has been cursed by one thing after the other.”
Maybe someone out there knows about this “deal” Robertson speaks of, but it appears to come out of left field.
Perhaps he’s feeling vengeful about all the American aid and funds now being directed toward Haiti?
Whatever his reason, the statement was an all too public depiction of the man’s true feelings.
When natural disasters occur, no matter where it may be in the world, there is always immediate recognition and discussion over whether we can help, and what we can help with.
Generally, the only debate swirling foreign aid is how much effort goes into it; those with most wealth want to give their all, while the more financially conservative will vie for the best help they can give.
Nonetheless, foreign aid in the existence of national disasters is a positive reaction; in this case, especially for the Haitians involved, as it directly benefits their future livelihood.
Maybe what Robertson meant to claim was more along the lines of, “Our country is also failing, just in a different way. Where’s our aid?”
Perhaps you should think before you speak of your feelings exclusively on national television.
Other issues aside, helping Haiti out in the midst of their catastrophe is nothing more than lending a helping hand.
