MCC design student Dominque Warren put on her second fashion show with the support of the Black student Union.Warren became interested in sewing at a young age.
“My mom made me take a sewing class in jr. high and I really caught on to it,” she said. “The first thing I ever sewed was a photo album cover for my mom’s wedding book. When I start sewing something I forget to eat and sleep.”
Shardai Sublett, a childhood friend and a model for the fashion show, said that Warren’s designs are “fabric to fabulous”.
Sublett explained that in jr. high, Warren would tailor and alter her clothes for her and said that she still makes clothes for her to this day.
Bryanna Ranger, a model for the fashion show described Warren’s designs as, “comfortable but sexy at the same time.”
Warren goes against the typical standards of today’s fashion by using models with a variety of different looks.
Around 80 people came to see and support Warren’s designs (30 garments in all).
“Some of it was original and some of it was general and not that creative,” said audience member Cecil Roberston.
Warren’s styles ranged from risky to sexy to extremely revealing. She won the audience over when she came out with an orange and brown tutu.
The Navajo room was filled with whistling and clapping for her designs.
“I like to challenge main stream creativity and think outside the box,” said Warren.
“I made a lot of the pink items for the show. I definitely wanted a dark skin chocolate girl to wear it,” she said, “The vision is to complete the outfit based on color and body type.
