Student struggles with tighter purse strings

Ashley Lawson

Our economy is in bad shape.Businesses throwing in the towel, home foreclosures, workers being laid-off; now students losing their education?

I know everyone is greedy but I never would’ve thought the government would take away the hopes and dreams of America’s future.

One of the main reasons people curtail their college days, or refrain from attending a university or college at all, is due in part to their cash flow situations.

It seems everyone is tightening their pockets right now.

Student servers who depend on their tips are feeling the impact.

No one is spending any money these days, even though you couldn’t tell by looking at the line winding out the door at Starbucks.

Other students are getting fewer and fewer hours at their part time jobs as the weeks pass by.

Thank you legislators for not helping out the working student at all.

Tuition is already pricey, what is the need for doubling it?

The government is discouraging more young people from receiving a higher education and putting a damper on my day.

Legislators insist it’s in everyone’s best interest and that they are trying to do the least amount of damage.

The least amount of damage would be to leave this alone and keep tuition as is.

Being a college student in 2009 is just way too damn expensive.

During these difficult economic times, universities and colleges need to rethink this whole doubling tuition while allowing publishers to charge $200 for one book ordeal.

You know like that Spanish literature book you will probably never use.

Have you met my wallet? She only likes to pay for necessities like bread, water, clothes and alcohol.

I am in the prime of my life.

I should be maxing out my credit card at Nordstrom, not bargain shopping at Wal-Mart.

Spending way too much money at a bar. I mean, $8 for a beer is a steal, right?

Instead you’ll see me at Dos Gringos on Thursday nights where they proudly serve Coronas at a low cost of 50 cents ’til midnight.

Making irresponsible purchases is what we college kids do best.

Unfortunately, this economy isn’t allowing me to live the dream, forcing us to make serious cutbacks on fun and suffer severe shopping withdraws.
