Students find interesting ways to increase cash flow

Kristin Villalpando

For college students looking to put a few extra bucks in their pocket, there is no shortage of interesting ways to go about it. Donating plasma, the liquid in which blood is suspended, can be a great way to earn some cash as well as help burn victims and hemophiliacs recover.

The process is simple; go to a local plasma donation office when a free afternoon comes up because the first visit may take around five hours to complete the process.

Bring a photo I.D., a social security card, and a current bill for proof of address.

The donation process itself takes about an hour or two depending on how much the person weighs (must be a minimum of 110 pounds) because the more a person weighs the more plasma they will produce.

The first donation will return $40 and $60 the second time.

There are also other more controversial ways to earn some cash. Some are turning to the donation of sperm and eggs. For some, this is a very touchy subject.

When asked if she would sell her eggs, Lindsey, a Mesa Community College freshman who asked that her last name not be used, said,”Not in a million years!

“There is no amount of money you could pay me to have a child in this world that I would never know. Just the thought of standing behind someone in line with a child and wondering if it was my egg that made that child would drive me crazy.”

Ashley, another freshman at MCC who didn’t want her last name used, said, “If I ever considered donating an egg it would be for the right reason.”

Kyle, an MCC student, who also asked that his last name not be used, said, that he had already had donated his sperm but now regrets it.

“At first I thought it was an easy way to make some money, but now that I think about it, wish I hadn’t.”

“I’m not sure what my sperm was used for but what if I have a child that I’ll never meet.”

“I just feel like someone else is going to raise my first child.”

“It’s weird!
