Summertime and the living’s easy…for some

Maryjane Bowyer

To some students summer break means fun in the sun, while to others it means summer school or work.Lauren Whitaker, a freshman MCC student, said, “My only plan is to work and go to summer school. Doing summer school will help me get ahead credit wise and working more hours will get me the money needed to go on a trip during the summer.”

Brooke Allen, a MCC freshman, has similar plans.

“This summer I think I’m going to focus on getting a new job and working a lot.”

For students who plan on getting a summer job and working this summer, MCC’s career services department can provide some help to aid with the search for a summer job or even a long-term career.

“Basically were here to help students realize their academic choices influence their future career goals,” Jackie Gill an MCC career services adviser said.

Gill also dished out some tips for students who are currently searching for a job.

“First you need to have a solid resume. You need to know who your audience is so you can speak to the employer and their needs,” she said.

“Its a good idea to practice being interviewed. You could do a mock interview and be sure to have answers ready to questions they might ask. Last is to network.”

She explained that looking for a job is a full time job in itself and good jobs aren’t easy to find.

For students taking the summer off from work and school there are several options for a summer time vacation.

Taking a trip to California is a favorite among most students.

San Diego and LA are top places to get with exceptional beaches.

Because of the recent increase in gas prices, airline ticket prices have increased, and driving out of state can be very costly.

If spending a lot of money isn’t an option, a visit to a nice resort in Phoenix or Scottsdale can be a quick fix for the need to get away.

Some hotels, like the Pointe Hilton in Phoenix, offer 3-day weekend packages starting at $99 a night for a suite.

Staying at a nice hotel in town for a weekend is an alternative to shelling out the big bucks for out of state travel.
