The ‘community’ behind the college

Ryan Garner

This is directed at my fellow students, and I’d like to point that out, since I am usually ranting about my own social or political pet peeves.

I’ve been quietly observing campus for two years now, writing opinions here less than one, and only in the past few weeks have I started to understand. MCC doesn’t really have much charm.

I’m focusing this minor disappointment on a few key shortcomings…

…Part A, which is basically my concern for the general malaise of our student body when it comes to making a significant difference in the lives of our own community.

Yes, I’m talking about the frumpiness of our age group when it comes to acting cool (Read: acting too cool) and reaching out.

I’ll explain in one sentence.

Where did all the awesome art projects, murals, clubs, gardens, games, events and gatherings go?

I’m talking about personality. Talent contests? Live music from real local bands?

Maybe more vendors selling quality, garden-grown snack food. Besides just the hot dog carts by the science buildings. (I still love Franks-A-Lot).

I mean, I don’t want to buy turnips at a club fair, but I wouldn’t mind buying some real fruit like oranges, bananas, or even some grapes to snack on.

And can we please lower the coffee prices? I’m pretty sure none of us have big corporate jobs and we aren’t trying to drink some corporate venti $4.25-which-might-as-well-be-5-dollar-cappucinno (since quarters are worthless now anyway).

Why do we irrigate our fields and complain about water when hardly anyone walks on the grass except for the kids in the sword fighting club?

As for sheer determination, I think I’ve seen one student who looks like he works on campus and also studies. He’s in the Environmental Action Club and works in the recycling department. His name is Joseph Nieves and he’s studying sustainability. So kudos to that guy.

Why does the only significant student club action seem to be when they bring out the cotton candy and slushee machines? Oh and let us not forget the quarter mile Cheba Hut line. (If you haven’t seen it, you will  come next club fair.)

Besides the light rail legislation push last year, I’ve seen one petition go around. So I’ll venture a guess that we aren’t too politically active as a student body. Feel free to correct me at any point if I’m off-based in any assumptions.

While I’m on politics, (told you I’d go there), if you aren’t voting you better have a good excuse not to, because you and I, my friends, are on the bottom row of the Great American Pyramid, and the eagles eyes are upon us.

I know, Part A kind of exploded into a full blown rant, sorry.

Part B is simple, I’m not saying that we all need to be Boy or Girl Scouts or be in every little hip club that starts up, just because a few people are really passionate about decking out their
