President Randolph Lumm and Interim President Jerry Walker were not present at the Nov. 23 Maricopa governing board meeting.Donald Campbell filled in for Walker.

“If you lose by 10,000 votes and your ego gets in your way, it’s hard for you to show up. He did say he is going to show up in December. If he does show up and Lumm is not here, he will take over the meeting,” Campbell said after the meeting adjourned.

Chancellor Rufus Glasper discussed the results of the mid-term election and their possible effects on the Maricopa community colleges with the board.

“Based on the recent election . where the state felt they could get additional funding to support their recommended shortfall, the state will look at a minimum of $850 (million) to $1 billion shortfall. The areas within the budget that are more discretionary . is education,” Glasper said.

ASU, NAU and U of A are expected to have larger cuts in subsidies than the community colleges.

“The universities, we believe, will be impacted more than the community colleges primarily because our primary funding source is not based upon sales tax,” Glasper said.

He also stressed that this could still cause issues with financing in the community colleges due to rising enrollment from students choosing those schools over the increasing cost of local universities.

“I hope that each of you will give some thought to how we can more effectively operate the systems taken into consideration that we may be a little short of money in the near future,” Campbell said to the meeting’s attendees in continuation to Glasper’s remarks.
